Join our 16D of Untouched Indonesia, and set your foot in an entirely new world. Including a visit to the orangutans, ancient stone grave in Toraja, and seeing the daily life of an indigenous tribe in Papua. Prepare to travel deep into the jungle and get a trip that will awe you all along!

Route : Pangkalan Bun – Banjarmasin – Makassar – Toraja – Wamena – Baliem Valley

Highlights : Tanjung Puting National Park, Dayak Tribe Village in Loksado, Banjarmasin floating market, Tana Toraja ancient stone grave, Dani Tribe in Baliem Valley, Mock Dance by Dani Tribe (only held during Baliem Festival in early August)

 

Day 1     Pangkalan Bun – Kumai – Tanjung Harapan (-/-/D)

We will pick you up at the airport and take you to Kumai sub district, about 25 minutes drive from the airport. Kumai is a harbor village on the west side area of Tanjung Puting National Park and also the entrance point to the national park. Upon arrival at Kumai , we will transfer into a traditional wooden boat, klotok, and introduce you to our crew who will accompany and serve you during the trip. When everything’s ready, we will start the trip to the park. It will take about two hours cruising until we get to the park. During this time, it is possible for you to see some animals such as some species of birds, monkeys, water lizards or snakes, and very likely the wild orangutans along the way on the river to the first station. Upon arrival at the first station, we will directly go to see the feeding of the orangutans at 3PM. Here you can see around 5 to 15 orangutans. After that, we will return to klotok and continue the trip on the river to see all other monkey species that are very easy to spot, like long tailed macaques and proboscis monkey. During the night we could also go to the nearby nipa palm forest to see the fireflies.

Day 2     Tanjung Harapan – Pondok Tanggui – Camp Leaky (B/L/D)

We will wake up early morning to enjoy and listen to the sound of animals such as birds, monkeys, or the big male orangutan’s long call. After breakfast and some coffee, we will continue the journey towards 2nd station, Pondok Tanggui, to see the feeding of orangutans at 9AM. After done seeing the feeding process at Pondok Tanggui Station, we will then head to the 3rd station, Camp Leaky. If we leave early, we might be able to see the crocodiles and some other animals throughout the way to Camp Leaky. Upon arrival at Camp Leaky, we will see the feeding of the orangutans at 2PM. Camp Leakey is the last camp for this trip, located at around Sekonyer River that has a black clean water. There are a lot of crocodiles, orangutans, wild boar, and gibbon. After feeding time, we will return back to the klotok  and find a spot to spent the night on the river near Camp Leakey. After diner, if the weather permit, we can also do some night trek to look for the night animals  and glowing mushroom, which usually can be found on the rainy season.

Day 3     Camp Leaky – Kumai – Pangkalan Bun – Banjarmasin (B/-/-)

After breakfast and take a river-water shower, we will go back to Pangkalan Bun Airport for your flight to Banjarmasin. Upon arrival at Banjarbaru Airport, then we will drive to Cempaka Village to see the diamonds mining process. After done, we will continue to Martapura to visit the souvenir market and old Banjar people houses. Then we will drive to Banjarmasin city for overnight.

Day 4     Floating Market – Nagara – Loksado (B/-/-)

Early morning at 05.00 with a motorized canoe, we will cruise to Lok Baintan floating market on Martapura River. After done we will go back to hotel for breakfast and check out, and then drive to Nagara town. Transfer to the boat to see the swimming buffalo. In the afternoon, drive to Loksado for overnight stay.

Day 5     Loksado – Banjarmasin (B/-/-)

We will do a morning walk to a Dayak village to visit their communal house and the waterfall. Then we will have an adventurous bamboo rafting on Amandit River. After done, we will drive back to Banjarmasin for overnight. Free program in the evening.

Day 6     Kuin Floating market – Alalak Delta – Makassar (B/-/-)

Early in the morning we will boating again to Barito River to visit Kuin floating market and Alalak Delta to see the boats and canoes production. Back to Banjarmasin then drive to the airport for your next flight to Makassar. Upon arrival, check in hotel for a rest.

Day 7     Makassar – Tana Toraja (B/-/-)

Pick up at your hotel early in the morning, and transfer to Makassar Airport for flight to Tana Toraja. Upon arrival in Toraja, we will start the tour visiting Ke’te Kesu (traditional wooden carving village and hanging grave), Marante (is a village where there’s a lot of Tongkonan houses, big paddy barns and big rocky hills containing hanging stone graves), Bori menhir stones, soared up several meters above the land. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will continue tour to visit Pallawa (the most beautiful village with buffalo horns in front of their houses), Lokomata (the boulder grave) and our last stop would be to visit Sa’dan To’Barana, the traditional cotton weaving village. In the afternoon, transfer to hotel for check in and free program.

Day 8     Toraja Fullday Tour (B/-/-)

After breakfast, we will head to visit Londa (the natural cave grave), Lemo (the cliff-side stone grave with wooden effigies on the balcony), the royal family tombs at Suaya, and then lunch at local restaurant. Afterwards continue the tour to visit Kambira (baby grave) and Sangalla, a village lying among the leafy bamboo trees and where the tomb of King Sangalla is located. After done, transfer back to the hotel.

Day 9     Toraja – Makassar (B/-/-)

After breakfast and check out hotel, we will head back to Makassar by land. The trip will pass some regencies in distance of 310 km (it’s about 8 – 9 hours drive from Makassar). On the way you’ll enjoy the beautiful rice field, fish pool and the traditional houses of Bugis Tribe, which is adorn the right and left side of the main road. Lunch will be served at Pare-pare. After lunch the trip will be continued and we will arrive in Makassar at about late afternoon, then check in to hotel.

Day 10   Makassar – Jayapura – Wamena (Light Breakfast/-/-)

Your flight to Jayapura will be early in the morning with 2 layovers (check out before breakfast time). Upon arrival in Jayapura, we will catch another flight to Wamena. Kindly note that baggage allowed for this flight is only 10kg per passenger, so you can leave your unnecessary baggage in Jayapura with us before leaving.
Upon arrival at Wamena we will begin our tour and visit Aikima, to explore the local traditional people of Baliem Valley. Along the way you will find Dani Tribe working in their sweet potato fields and we will see their daily activities. Then we will head to Suroba, walk through the pine forest, enjoying the beautiful nature setting and crossing a bridge over Aike River before you arrive at the main road where the car will be waiting for you. We will then hike for 1-2 hours through the beautiful countryside and passing the traditional houses of Dani Tribe.  In the late afternoon, we will drive back to Wamena for overnight.

Day 11   Trekking South Baliem Gorge (B/L/-)

In the morning we will drive to the southern Baliem Valley. The road ends in a village called Sogogmo, about 3 km before Kurima. Our walking tour along the powerful Baliem River will begin here. First a suspension bridge has to be crossed. After that the tour goes on through Dani settlements with terrace fields and wild groves of sugar cane. All the time we will have a wonderful sight over the river and the narrow valley. In the early afternoon we will reach the church of Seima where we will have our lunch surrounded by beautiful landscape. Before we reach Kurima, another suspension bridge has to be crossed. This trek offers unique photo opportunities and our car will take us return to the hotel in the late afternoon. (Easy trek in approx 3-4 hours).

Day 12   Baliem Valley Tour (B/L/-)

In the morning we will drive up to Jiwika in the central Baliem Valley. Our one hour trek begins at the base of the mountain and ascends 300 meters through a beautiful rain forest, reaching the traditional salt spring of a Dani clan. Clothed in their traditional costumes, the native inhabitants will demonstrate the old techniques of the salt production. Following the demonstration, we will have our lunch on the mountain base then walk down to a Kurulu hamlet, where a very old mummy of the famous Dugum clan is proudly presented for your viewing. In the vicinity we will see more picturesque hamlets. Everywhere, the friendly natives will offer their arts and crafts, weapons and curiosities for you to see. In the afternoon drive back to the hotel.

Day 13   Mock Battle – Traditional Dance – Contilola Cave – Traditional Market (B/L/-)

A special welcome will be given to you upon your arrival in the village; the tribe member will assemble wearing their best outfit to show their appreciation. The Tribe chief will stand on a traditional deck and give the order to his people to celebrate. A special “Mock Battle” is one of the most interesting exhibitions you will see on traveling to Papua. Photographers and movie makers has said that this unique event cannot be described by words and you have to see it with your own eyes.  Lunchboxes will be served in the villages.  On our way back we will visit the famous Contilola Cave. A section of this huge cave is partially broken down, a condition that contributes to a lush vegetation. We will stop at traditional market before returning to the hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 14   Wamena – Denpasar – Kuta (Light Breakfast/-/-)

Transfer to Wamena Airport for your early morning flight to Jayapura. Upon arrival in Jayapura, we will take another flight to Denpasar. Upon arrival in Denpasar, we will transfer to your hotel in Kuta area for overnight. Free program to enjoy on your own.

Day 15   Kuta (B/-/-)

Free program. You can explore Kuta area on your own, shopping, café hopping, or watching the beautiful sunset.

Day 16   Kuta – Denpasar (B/-/-)

Pick up at your hotel at agreed time and transfer to Denpasar Airport for your flight home.
